Health
We prioritise the health and wellness of our employees by implementing a comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management system. This system enables us to anticipate, identify, evaluate, control, and monitor occupational health hazards and exposures. We provide occupational health services, ensuring access to medical teams and emergency response teams.
All our employees are covered by OHS programs, and each area has access to fully equipped medical teams and basic medical care. Additionally, service-level agreements with local hospitals guarantee access to healthcare professionals for employees and their direct family members.
Kakula Clinic and Kamoa Copper Hospital
In 2022, the Kakula Clinic and Trauma Centre began serving employees and contractors from Kakula North and South.
The clinic features a minor trauma procedure room, a medical laboratory, and a pharmacy. All medical, emergency, and trauma cases are assessed at the clinic, with transportation available to the Kamoa Copper hospital if necessary.
The Kamoa Copper hospital is a state-of-the-art facility equipped with an emergency casualty ward and intensive care unit. The hospital provides stabilisation and comprehensive care for patients. We have a fully functional radiology unit, including an x-ray and sonar facility.
Additionally, an on-site occupational health centre has been constructed for pre-employment and annual medical surveillance assessments.
Our Community-Based Health Initiatives
Our dedicated community relations team is committed to prioritising engagement and supporting initiatives that focus on community health and safety.
As part of Kamoa Copper’s Cahier des Charges agreement, the construction of six new clinics in the communities surrounding the project commenced in 2023. These clinics facilitate maternity, paediatric and general health care, and benefit nine communities.
Health centres in Mundjendje and Mwilu communities have been completed, benefiting around 3,149 people. The Muvunda Clinic, with 48 beds and four cradles, has been completed and stocked, and handed over to the Muvunda community in 2023.
Malaria
Due to our location in a malaria endemic zone, the risk of malaria is a continual health threat.
Preventative measures such as indoor spraying, larvicide treatment, fogging, mosquito nets, and ongoing awareness campaigns are implemented to manage this risk.
Sensitisation campaigns throughout the year ensure an early and appropriate diagnosis and treatment response and this includes surrounding communities.
Reliable laboratory diagnostics at the Kamoa Copper hospital play a crucial role in ensuring early and appropriate treatment responses for malaria and typhoid fever.
HIV and Cancer Awareness
As part of our ongoing HIV awareness campaigns, we provide HIV counselling, voluntary screening and treatment.
World AIDS Day is commemorated annually, to provide an opportunity for raising awareness and providing voluntary tests to employees.
Kamoa Copper spearheads cancer awareness, advocating for early detection and support for affected individuals.
Occupational Health
Our occupational health program mandates baseline health checks before employment and routine updates thereafter.
These checks monitor employee well-being and evaluate the effectiveness of health controls. Additionally, voluntary wellness campaigns support employees’ health with timely observations and proactive measures against chronic conditions like cholesterol and diabetes.
Occupational Hygiene
Occupational hygiene entails the identification and prevention of occupational health hazards arising from work processes.
We continuously review our occupational hygiene surveillance program, conducting job-specific risk assessments to access exposure levels. Corrective actions are promptly taken to address any deviations found.
Our surveillance program covers potable water, underground ventilation, exposure to dust, and noxious gasses. We also enhance our efforts through conducting baseline risk assessments for noise and airborne pollutants.
