Riaan Vermeulen
Managing Director
Riaan Vermeulen brings over 35 years of experience in both underground and open-pit mining, with a career spanning diverse operational, project, and technical management roles. Prior to joining Kamoa Copper as Managing Director, Riaan served as Head of Projects at Debswana Diamond Company in Botswana, where he managed major initiatives like the Jwaneng Underground, Orapa Cut 3, and Orapa 2 plant expansion projects. He has held senior roles with De Beers, including Head of Business Planning and Investments, Head of Technical, and Head of Mining, as well as Head of Mine Planning at Anglo Platinum.
Riaan holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer in both Botswana and South Africa, underscoring his technical and regulatory expertise. His international experience across South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Chile, Brazil, Ireland, and Canada has equipped him with a deep understanding of the mining sector across continents.
As Managing Director, Riaan oversees Kamoa Copper’s operational and strategic direction, leveraging his extensive experience to guide projects and optimise mine performance. His multi-commodity expertise, covering base metals, precious metals, and diamonds, is invaluable to Kamoa’s operations, helping the company achieve efficient and sustainable production.
